January Winter
Hello friends,
January was a warm, brown month, with no snow. Most of the month felt like we were back in Virginia. It was a busy month, spent loving our dog Lily and planning our third annual Chilly Open winter camp scheduled in February.
Given a 4-6 week diagnosis at the end of October, we held our breath waiting for Lily to tell us it was time for her to slip into heaven. That day happened on January 22nd. It was incredibly sad, and we miss her terribly.
I spent most of the month close to home, taking down Christmas decor, decluttering/re-organizing, and finalizing the details for a 25 person/4-day weekend in early February.
Yoga on the Mat
My asana practice means the world to me after breaking my arm in 2021 and spending 2.5 years recovering. One year ago, I couldn’t put any weight on my right arm and today I can flow through Sun Salutations. It’s been a lot of work, painful at times paired with building the mental strength and acceptance that I will likely live with some pain forever.
To build strength, one must commit. I challenged myself to take six classes a week last fall. In January, I taught nine classes, and practiced 17 times. I’m incredibly grateful to have a meaningful practice on the mat.
I’m currently teaching “body listening”. What can you feel in stillness? While holding a pose? What your body is telling you and how will you respond?

What I’m reading: I read four books in January. I gave five stars to Pete and Alice in Maine. Click here to see the complete list.
I just started reading The Inspired Yoga Teacher. This was a Christmas gift from my family and I’m really looking forward to reading it.
What I’m listening to: Doesn’t it feel like there is so much unrest all around the world right now? I started The Bible in a Year podcast as one of my 2024 personal growth goals. I haven’t read the bible and thought this would be a nice way to learn.
Sourdough Escapades: I made three batches of English Muffins in preparation for a firepit breakfast we have planned next month. We loved the favor so much that I can’t imagine buying them again. There’s something about the cornmeal hitting the cast iron skillet that tastes amazing. Here’s the recipe I followed.
Looking ahead:
A few of the gals from my YTT and I are starting a yoga circle. Pausing to take time to connect and share.
I have scheduled two outdoor yoga events, one on May 18 and the other on June 8th. I will share the details in the Spring. Please follow me on Instagram or sign up for my newsletter -these are the best places to stay connected.
I would love to hear from you. What would you like me to share?
With love and gratitude,
Mari
